| The ultimate reflection of trauma: How The Marionette in Five Nights at Freddy's 2 represents the cycle of revenge and lost innocence |
After the massive success achieved by the
movie Five Nights at Freddy's 2023, I had to go through my own experience of downloading and watching the second part which was released just days ago.
At the beginning, you should know that the story of the movie goes back to the famous horror game that was released more than twelve years ago, specifically in 2014 under the name Five Nights at Freddy's. This game, developed by programmer Scott Cawthon, achieved huge success across multiple platforms such as Google Play, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation, Xbox One, and others. The gameplay videos on YouTube also ranked eighth among the most viewed gaming videos worldwide.
The popularity of the game increased even more when comedian Jack Black danced to the Five Nights at Freddy's song on TikTok, which boosted views and downloads significantly, in addition to the release of game tools, characters, and outfits in stores that achieved massive sales.
After all the success achieved by Five Nights at Freddy's, a new improved version of the game was released in 2021 using the famous Unreal Engine 4, which is used to develop some of the most successful and high-quality games worldwide. It gained global success, and within months, a multiplayer version was launched in Asia and North America, which made producers start thinking about turning the game into a movie.

The second part follows a flashback storytelling style, where we see the family restaurant turning into a stage for a horrific crime when the child Charlotte is killed by a mysterious murderer, and her spirit transforms into the Marionette. After the truth is buried and years pass, she begins controlling events and summoning victims. The city becomes controlled by spirits seeking revenge, turning into real horror. Psychological Analysis of the Movie Characters
The movie should not be viewed as mere entertainment, because writers often rely on psychological complexities, especially in horror and crime films, to convince the audience. Because if they do not do that, the film would become too fictional and would not touch any aspect of the viewer. Therefore, we will analyze the characters that appeared in the movie and present their problems in a more realistic way.
1- William Afton (The Father and Killer)
Psychological Analysis: He suffers from psychopathy and narcissism; he lacks empathy and sees children even his own as tools. He has a “god complex” where he seeks to control death and immortality, as if he is above humans. He also leaves a “toxic legacy” that extends its influence to his children.
Real-life Example: A very successful man in his work, a manager of a large company, everyone fears and respects him. But in his home, he was cold and harsh. If his son cried, he would say to him: "Weakness is for the weak." And if he failed, he treated him as if it were a personal failure for him. One of his children grew up not knowing the meaning of love… he only knew the meaning of control. And he began to deal with those around him with the same cruelty, as if pain was the only language he learned.
2- Vanessa (Conflict Between Victim and Loyalty)
Psychological Analysis: She suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and lives in constant fear of her father. She has features of Stockholm Syndrome; she is torn between hating him and being attached to him. In the end, she suffers from a loss of identity as a result of the accumulation of traumas.
Real-life Example: A quiet girl, always saying about her father: "He is harsh but he loves me." She grew up seeing harm, but she always found a justification for him. When someone tried to get close to her and help her, she started talking… but suddenly she defended him! As if she was afraid of betraying him or losing the only bond between them. In a moment of weakness, she asked herself: "Do I hate him… or am I used to him?"
3- Mike Schmidt (Responsibility and Guilt)
Psychological Analysis: He suffers from survivor’s guilt and guilt towards the disappearance of his brother. He uses denial as a defense mechanism to avoid facing the painful truth.
Real-life Example: A young man lost his little brother while he was responsible for him. Since then, he has been living with the same sentence: "If I had done something different…" He became obsessed with protecting his sister, preventing her from going out, fearing for her from everything. She sees that he is suffocating her… and he sees that he is trying to save her from his brother’s fate. In fact, he is not just protecting her… he is fighting the ghost of the past that never left him.
4- Abby (Innocence and Emotional Attachment)
Psychological Analysis: She suffers from loneliness and looks for belonging, so she creates bonds with machines. She represents attachment to things as a substitute for human relationships, making her vulnerable to exploitation.
Real-life Example: A child spends all her time with her toys, talking to them and laughing with them.
When someone asks her: "Why don’t you play with your friends?" She replies: "These understand me more." At home, no one is free for her. And at school, no one is like her. So she created a world of her own… but anyone who enters this world and cares for her, she can trust him very easily… even if he is dangerous.
5- The Marionette (Charlotte Emily)
Psychological Analysis: Represents repressed anger and retaliatory justice. She is a victim who has turned into an entity that does not differentiate between the innocent and the guilty and seeks revenge by any means.
Real-life Example: A child was harmed, tried to ask for help… but no one heard her. She grew up seeing that the world is unjust. And one day, she started harming others not because she is evil, but because she is convinced that: "No one was kind to me… why should I be kind?" She began to confuse revenge and justice… and every time she harms someone, she feels that she is reclaiming part of her lost strength.
6- The Environment (Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza)
Psychological Analysis: Represents a “desolate space”; a familiar place that turned into a source of fear, creating deep psychological trauma and cognitive dissonance.
Real-life Example: A place you used to go to in the past and laugh in a school, a club, or even a relative’s house.
And suddenly a difficult accident happened in it. You returned to it after a while… everything is as it is, but your feeling is different. Laughter became heavy, and memories became painful. The place itself began to hurt you… even though it did not change.

Psychological Conclusion
This story is not just horror… it is a tale about inherited pain and about people trying to escape from it, understand it, or even repeat it. Every character does not only represent itself… it represents a real human ondition that can exist around us every day.
